Grilling & Picnicking: Infestation Prevention

Grilling and picnicking infestation prevention 259x300 Grilling & Picnicking: Infestation PreventionJuly is National Picnic Month, so you need to implement some serious infestation prevention if your outdoor activities are to limit pests. If mosquitoes, flies, yellow jackets or ants are your biggest concerns, these tips to prevent infestation will help keep the bugs away so you can enjoy your meal and great company in peace.

  • Get rid of standing water: Preparing the back yard for a picnic or barbecue is the first step of infestation prevention. The best way to do this is to get rid of standing water. Empty bird baths, drainage pans of flower pots and pet watering dishes frequently. Inspect tree holes for collected water. These, too, can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  • Wear insect repellent: Mosquitoes are particularly active at dusk, so if your barbecue or picnic is expected to last until then, be sure to wear insect repellent and offer it to all guests. Look for an over-the-counter product that contains DEET for the most effective protection. If the yard or park is a particularly woodsy area, wear insect repellent all day.
  • Seal food promptly: No doubt ants and flies want a bite of burger, too. Prevent them from partaking by keeping food tightly sealed until it’s time to eat. Store leftovers in tightly sealed containers, clean up spills quickly, and keep a lid on the garbage bin.
  • Keep sweet smells to a minimum: Yellow jackets love the smell of perfumes, colognes, and lotions as much as humans. To help aid infestation prevention, avoid wearing these scented items to a picnic.
  • Use plastic cups: It’s wise to provide guests with plastic cups. Aluminum cans provide a sneaky place for sugar-loving insects to hide. The bee or wasp that crawls into a can for a drink may deliver a nasty sting if anyone drinks from that can. That’s sure to ruin the picnic!
  • Clean up after yourself: Bring all the cutlery back inside as soon as everyone is done eating. Put leftovers away and throw out disposable tablecloths, or wipe off reusable versions. Serve additional drinks inside.

Now, you can enjoy the rest of the evening outdoors with fewer pests thanks to these infestation prevention tips.
