You don’t have to be on Survivor to experience eating bugs

A slimy grub or a crunchy grasshopper may not sound like an ideal lunch, but there are plenty of tasty bugs you can eat that may actually be good for you!  In fact, entomophagy (eating bugs) is really only taboo in Western culture.  Millions of people living in traditional societies around the world eat bugs every day for their protein and oh-so-appetizing textures.   As with any foods, you should eat in moderation.  Here are some yummy bugs you can eat!

  • Witchetty Grubs:  You know those fat, white, slimy grubs native to Australia?  When fire-roasted, they apparently taste like scrambled eggs and, as an added bonus, they are loaded with protein!
  • Grasshoppers: The pleasant crunch you can get from corn chips can also be found in grasshoppers. Turn these household bugs into a meal by wrapping them in tortillas and smearing them with guacamole.  Muy bueno!
  • Termites:  These bugs you can eat like to dine on the wooden structure of your home; why not give them a taste of their own medicine?  Snacking on termites is quite normal in Uganda; though raiding a termite mound takes a bit more work than raiding the refrigerator.
  • Crickets:  Another crispy insect joins the menu of edible bugs!  Cricket lollipops are sold in America by some eccentric candy companies.  Most customers buy them because it seems unbelievably disgusting, but it’s quite normal to eat nutrient-rich crickets in many areas of the world.
  • Earthworms:  If you’re on a high-protein diet, start eating bugs like earthworms!  Rumor has it, once you wash off the dirt; their taste is similar to bacon!  In fact, they are a dinner table regular in Venezuela.
  • Honeypot Ants:  Native to Australia, these edible insects gorge themselves until their abdomen swells with a nectar-like substance.  They are eaten raw as a sweet treat by aborigines, but you can stick to candy for dessert if you prefer.
  • Mealworms:  Can’t afford shrimp?  Well, it’s said that mealworms – often used as fish bait – taste like nutty shrimp.  Just close your eyes and maybe you won’t be able to tell the difference.

If you find any of these creepy crawly bugs you can eat in your home, you fortunately don’t have to resort to eating them – unless you really want to. Luckily, most of these are not your typical household pests. If you do need help with termite protection or pest management services, we’ll be happy to help.
